Is longing a condition of the heart?
Or, is it a disease of the mind, like
Amnesia that makes you forget old events?
If it’s not of emotions
Why does the chest experience sensations
Of tenderness like a fresh wound?
Who suffers from it? Who doesn’t?
Are some less vulnerable than others?
I look around me:
The eyes of the despot are as sad
As the eyes of Jesus.
All day a girl glances helplessly at a silent phone;
My elderly neighbour refuses food until his wife comes home.
How does it win such power to inspire foolish behaviour?
Is it a permanent quality in certain people?
Like integrity Or ambition.
Can it be purposefully extinguished, like
A candle in a draft of wind?
Do humans alone have it? What about birds
After their babies leave the nests? A mother elephant
Cries for her calf when he is taken from her.
Does it last in them as long as it lasts in us?
Is theirs as whimsical as ours?
And that makes me wonder if
The size is a function of the depth of feelings, or
Whether it is longing that influences the (non-)depth.
Wow, Vera. Here You go again. This: “..Why does the chest experience sensations
Of tenderness like a fresh wound?” has been on my mind constantly of late. One of my next posts, in my roundabout way, is going to be about that. You solidified this with such beautiful words and branched it out to places I’d not thought about. A planetary condition? God. Love this so much. Thank You. ❤️❤️❤️

I forgot! This, what You’ve written about, is actually the feeling I was talking to in ‘ghost’.

Ah… I see now… that it is okay to let your emotional ghost just be, or fly!
