the point

even if we knew the children were dirty
and hungry the budget in deficit the sewers
overflowing and justices unjust

even if everything we wrote for it
were vacuous our voices hollow, like
sound from tiles in a public bath

not honest lines

with life’s sheer weight behind it

even if people and not just friends
told us this was self-sabotage and insane

even if we ourselves had fitted shutters
and metal screens to windows secured
loose yard items for the worst impending disaster

even if time were not on our side
and in this in-between world
sounds of living souls had already
shifted back

would we let go
more easily feel less bitter more relieved
without fear of regret we’d
never know what
might have been
