the rain falls
in sheets the plants
and buds swell like
a pubescent girl in an
outgrown dress the
silver is cold windows
drip with expression and
i am travelling with languor

i sit and read an old interview
by the Paris Review with William
Trevor where he describes short-
story writing as “art of the glimpse” but
sometimes one thinks it is more
an art of the blink
and you miss something
it is all lush and fecund

so i thought i would now
edit my poems and
write instead a new poem
on my yellow scrap-book that
has pages torn out maybe it
is why i prefer a stamp album you can
remove a snap-shot without
showing where they’d been

funny i should always read African
stories in the bitterest end
of winter i suppose because
they are full of sweat and
symbols and it is not a bad idea
to concentrate a little to
warm my toes and warm up a little
to feel their sweat

  2. Fantastic imagery. Loved this part – “short-/ story writing as β€œart of the glimpse” but / sometimes one thinks it is more / an art of the blink / and you miss something”. It speaks to my writing soul. πŸ™‚

  3. Gosh. You have me on a train….traveling. You’ve awoken my wanderlust. This is so cool. Beautiful words and rhythm and flow and….(insert delicious sigh…..). I don’t know if You’re really wandering about or just doing it in Your mind/on the page….but….Bon Voyage, Beautiful Vera!!! πŸ™‚

  4. That’s funny! I started to reply and seriously got that same motion in my heart from when I was reading Your poem. You’ve left me on this train. Hop on!!! I say next stop Africa, indeed!!! And if I ever win the lottery, I’ve had a world theatre project romping around my brain for years. It sweeps along with it many artists of many walks of expression. Well, if the day ever comes when I am blessed with uber amounts of money and can make it happen, I’ll send You a ticket with prayers that You will come be part of it all!!! Hope You had a great weekend! πŸ€—πŸ¬β˜€οΈπŸ’–πŸ˜€!
