One day if that day comes we will be convinced
That connection is not an accumulation of contacts
But unseen engagement of the heart
That realness is finding one another’s words
In our own expressions so we cannot tell
Where one begins and the other ends

One day if that day comes we will agree
The way I am unpredictable and talk to strangers
Or cut my nails and paint them black
Is not less liberal or laissez-faire than
How you clench your fist at the desk
All being open gestures of rebellion

One day if one day comes we will
Be back in the place of learning where
You’ll say I cannot have you in my class
And I’ll say You must, for the sake of
Trying to be friends
then you’ll reply You stopped that
Long ago
It shall be weird            But we will have taken the step

One day if one day ever comes we will
Return to these articles and poems
That set us afire in these turbulent times when
I’ll say Whenever you wrote
I could not ignore you
            And you’ll say
Dammit, I read you each time when I hated you

  2. I don’t know what to say…other than you, Vera, connect in such a purposeful and unvarnished way. No doubting, no avoiding, no way to say “no.” Just pure, powerful, compelling attraction.

  3. And here I am again…unable to let this verse pass me. That, Vera, is the irrefutable power of your words. Sigh…

    1. I feel the same about yours, Bill.

      1. You have no idea how much that means…

  5. When I read this work out loud, I love it all the more. So well done Vera.

  6. This is so lovely, Vera. It brought me hope and made me feel less alone in relationships lost that I still think about. I forget sometimes that everyone, absolutely everyone has may comings and goings. Thank You. ❤️
