Fragments

Words swell with meaning
Stretch at the seams

The steps that disappear into the sky
Taking you to untold heights

My heart folded with well-wishes like
A hand-written card

To have loved you
When you didn’t love yourself

And still to love
But only as personage in the morning news

**

Just now
Wrote a report for work
On reality versus illusion

Went and picked up the print-copy

Thought about the dream
This morning:

Somewhere dark in the forest
Did not know where I was
Did not care to know

As if the kernel of consciousness
Was my destination

Gnarly tree roots
Walked in front of me

The night was inhabited by a cry
That flapped out looking for love

I turned —
There were rustling steps behind me

And woke

The phone said 2:38
The message from you yesterday was still unread

**

Our words
Trying to read one another’s minds

Postcards and letters piling inside drawers
Next to copies of our own

Does it matter
They came out of forgotten intentions

As Springtime out of seasons
When colour

Warmed the landscape
All Winter like lavender

  1. Absolutely brilliant! The dream no different from reality, the work no different from illusion, the messages passing by, but love remains
